I worked with a company called Stage Door Theatre, designing a set for a play set during World War One. The play was about letters written in the trenches and at home at the time. They asked for a simple set that can be easily moved around, as it was needed for a few productions. They wanted a wartime home scene and a trench scene for the play. The first and main production was going to take place in St George’s Hall in Liverpool and so it needed to fit this space but also be made smaller for different venues if need be.
We made the set in panels so that the sections could be angled and joined together or moved apart for different productions and also so they could be easily transported and stored. We wanted a framework for the objects to hang in, instead of a flat wall so that they gave a more abstract look to the home, showing how the memories of the people were fragmented at the time.
